China will earnestly study the issue of lifting UN sanctions on Libya, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu said Wednesday.

Jiang said at a regular press conference that the UN Security Council had passed resolutions 1970 and 1973, which imposed sanctions on Libya.

"The decision to lift the sanctions on Libya should also be made by the UN Security Council through consultation," Jiang said.

In regards to some countries' proposal to partially eliminate the UN sanctions, the Chinese side will earnestly study the relevant draft resolution, Jiang said.

"The Chinese side is ready to maintain communication with all relevant parties on this issue," she said.

China on Monday officially recognized the National Transition Council (NTC) of Libya as the ruling authority and representative of the Libyan people.

Jiang Yu said on Tuesday that China looks forward to the establishment of an interim Libyan government at an early date as well as a peaceful and orderly regime transition for the war-torn country.
