The Wakayama Prefecture in western Japan, which was hit hard by a recent powerful typhoon, has suffered a huge loss of some 2 billion yen (about 26 million U. S. dollars) in its local farming, forestry and fishery, according to Kyodo News report.

The report, quoting a local survey, said Typhoon Talas caused damage of around 880 million yen (11.4 million dollars) to farm products including oranges and Japanese apricots, while damages to the fishery and forestry are worth about 160 million yen ( 2 million dollars) and 520 million yen (6.8 million dollars) respectively.

The disaster also caused an estimated 490 million yen (6.4 million dollars) in damage to farmland, irrigation channels and other facilities.

The survey does not include damage to the livestock industry, and the total loss may turn out to be much larger. Nara Prefecture, which was also hit hard, is conducting its own survey into the extent of damage, the report said.

Typhoon Talas, which ravaged western Japan a week ago, has left 57 people dead and 44 missing in Japan.
