An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted Japan's northeastern Miyagi Prefecture and its vicinity on Saturday, said the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The focus of the quake, which occurred at 13:34 p.m. local time (0434 GMT), was located some 125 km off the coast of Sendai, Miyagi with a depth of 35.7 km under seabed, said the agency and the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to properties, and no tsunami warning was issued.
