The United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was on a visit in India since Tuesday, arrived Wednesday in the southern Indian city of Chennai.
Chennai has attracted American investments from automobile companies like Ford Motor Company, Caterpillar and others.
Hillary was also scheduled to meet newly elected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
Hillary was expected to address to students, opinion-makers and others at the Anna Centenary Library. After that, Clinton would visit Kalakshetra Foundation Cultural Center.
Tamil Nadu had a local legislative election in April, which led to a change of government.
According to local media reports, Clinton first wished to visit the eastern metropolis of Kolkata. But due to reservations from the Indian side, she shifted her route to Chennai.
Indian government officials suggested that Clinton not visit Kolkata, as the city has just undergone a change of government as the left-wing forces lost a newly held election.
The timing of the visit by Clinton to the city could raise speculation of U.S. interference into the internal affairs of India, said local daily The Telegraph.
