Yemen's protesters reject GCC power transition deal

Youth-led street protesters said on Saturday that they rejected any initiative mediated by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) excluding immediate departure of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and prosecution on him.
"We reject any GCC power-transition initiative that only seeks to grant President Saleh more time in office through considering the youth's revolution as a political crisis between the ruling party and the opposition," the organization committee of the protesters said in a statement obtained by Xinhua.
"We reaffirmed our stance to the GCC mediators that our peaceful revolution have no relation with the political crisis between the ruling party and opposition and we refuse any initiative without meeting our clear demands," it said.
They vowed to escalate the three-month protests into a planned final stage of the revolution to press an immediate end to the 33- year rule of Saleh, but they did not provide further details.
Under the recent proposed GCC initiative, Saleh should leave office within 30 days after signing the deal in exchange for immunity from prosecution, and the new government, formed by the opposition within seven days, should arrange presidential and parliamentary elections in 60 days.
Major cities of provinces of Aden, Taiz, Al-Dhalee, Al-Hodayda, Hadramout, Ibb and Al-Bayda reportedly witnessed on Saturday a comprehensive civil disobedience at the request of the protests' organization committee.
