The disastrous storms and tornados that swept through the southern United States Thursday has claimed nearly 300 lives, with 198 confirmed dead in the state of Alabama alone, CNN reported.
A state of emergency has been declared in seven states, and federal aid money is being sent to Alabama, BBC reported.
In Alabama, as many as one million people were without electrictiy on Thursday, as emergency workers and 2,000 soldiers were searching for survivors, according to BBC reports.
This would be worst tornado outbreak since 1974 when a super tornado killed more than 300 people.
President Barack Obama on Thursday called the loss of life "heartbreaking," and promised to help the people of Alabama and all citizens affected by the storms.
"We can't control when or where a terrible storm may strike, but we can control how we respond to it," Obama said during a press conference at the White House. "The federal government will do everything we can to help you recover."
The White House said Obama will travel to Alabama on Friday and examine the damage caused by the storms. He will also meet with Governor Bentley, state and local officials and families affected by the storms.
