Russia criticizes U.S. human rights report

Moscow regretted that the annual human rights report published by the U.S. State Department employs double standards, Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
"The Americans did not mention their own records, such as in Iraq and Afghanistan where hundreds of civilians died due to indiscriminate use of force. And the prisons in Guantanamo and Bagram have not been closed despite the promises," the statement posted on Russian Foreign Ministry's official website said.
Moscow stressed that in the U.S. authorities use phones taping and other privacy violations as an excuse for fighting terrorism.
"The United States remains the largest market of human trafficking for sexual and work exploitation as well as of child pornography," the statement said.
The Russian ministry noted that U.S. will unlikely become a leader in democracy and human rights until its own reputation is impeccable.
"It would be not too bad if they analyze the human rights situation at home and include this information into the next yearly report. Otherwise, its value would remain doubtful," it said.
The statement mentioned that the UN Human Rights Council has made over 220 recommendations for the U.S. human rights situation.
In its annual report on human rights situation in more than 190 countries and regions, which was released on Friday, the United States claimed that "negative" trend in many countries' human rights record continued.
