Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh welcomed the efforts made by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and said he was ready to transfer his power peacefully within the framework of Yemeni constitution, an official of his office said on Monday.

However, an official of Saleh's ruling party told Xinhua on Monday that his party has an objection to the plan, and said that the final decision will be made according to the Yemeni people's willingness on Friday.

The Presidential office of Saleh released a statement, saying " We have received the statement that issued in Riyadh by the states of the GCC on Sunday, April 10, and the presidential palace welcomed the efforts of our brothers in the GCC to solve the ongoing political crisis in Yemen."

"As the president has announced many times, he is ready to move the power peacefully and smoothly in the framework of the Yemeni constitution, and the Republic of Yemen confirms that it will deal positively with the proposal of the GCC to stave off chaos to the country," the statement said.

The GCC on Sunday in a statement called for President Saleh to transfer power to his deputy and enable the opposition Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) to lead a transitional national unity government.

The final statement, which was issued in Riyadh following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the six-nation GCC and Yemen, said after the opposition JMP forms the transitional government, it will be authorized to write a new constitution and prepare for holding elections.
