A military operation launched by Afghan and NATO-led forces killed over 80 Taliban insurgents in Kunar province, some 185 km east of capital city of Kabul, a NATO press release Thursday said.
"Afghan National Security Forces and coalition force concluded operations in the Marawara district, Kunar province today after clearing out insurgent fighters near the villages of Sarowbay, Barawarlow Kalay, Shirugay, Kowtgay and the surrounding area," said the press release issued in Kabul by NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
According to the release the combined security force moved into mountainous areas near the Pakistan border in order to disrupt insurgent activities in the region and protect the people in the remote areas.
It said more than 100 insurgents were engaged during the offensive operation, adding "More than 80 insurgents were killed in the operation," according to the release joint force uncovered several weapon caches in the operation lasted for several days. Meantime it asserted that no civilian casualties were reported during the operation.
Taliban militants have yet to make comments.
The mountainous Kunar and neighboring Nuristan province has been regarded as Taliban stronghold in eastern part of the insurgency-hit country.
