Air strike kills over 30 insurgnets in E. Afghanistan

An air strike against militants in Afghanistan's Kunar province, some 185 km east of capital Kabul, killed more than 30 insurgents, the NATO said in a press releae on Friday.
"A coalition forces air weapons team engaged a large number of armed insurgents in Ghaziabad district, Kunar province, killing more than 30 insurgents overnight," the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed in the press releae.
The raids took place when an air weapons team, on an aerial security patrol, positively identified armed insurgents in the area and engaged them, it said.
"After the initial firing, a large number of armed individuals emerged from a nearby building and were subsequently targeted and killed by the air weapons team."
Several additional armed individuals were positively identified and killed over the course of the more than four-hour engagement, it added.
Initial reports indicate all rounds were safe and on target. There are no reports of injuries to civilians in this remote area of Kunar, the press release asserted.
The mountainous Kunar and nieghboirng Nuristan province has been regarded as Taliban stronghold in eastern Afghanistan.
Taliban militants have yet to make comments.
Hours earlier in the day, a suicide car bomb targeting a police checkpoint killed nine people including two policemen and injured more than 30 others in Afghanistan's Khost province, 150 km southeast of capital Kabul.
