Haitians protest against vote fraud

Thousands of Haitians took to the streets on Sunday to protest what they consider an electoral fraud following a general election in which two people died in clashes.

The main demonstrations were in Petionville, Delmas in the capital Port-au-Prince, and in Carrefour, a neighboring municipality which has become part of the capital conurbation. Carrefour was one of the areas worst hit by the nation's Jan. 12 earthquake.

The protestors were responding to a call by 12 opposition presidential candidates, who also alleged widespread stuffing of ballots for president. Protestors chanted outside the Provisional Electoral Council (PEC) buildings demanding the resignation of councilors and the president.

In Saint Marc, thousands of Mirlande Manigat followers attacked polling stations and destroyed polling materials as United Nations troops looked on impotent. Manigat is the favorite to win according to voter surveys published last week. She was one of the 12 who allege fraud.

Two people died in clash between rival party supporters during the day. The violence was in Aquin, a small town a few kilometers from Les Cayes, Haiti's third largest city.
