A small plane crashed into a mountain in Spain's northern Navarra region on Tuesday, killing three Frenchmen on board, local authorities said Wednesday.

The plane took off from Lezignan-Corbieres, a town in southern France, and was headed for Salamanca, Spain, the first stop in their planned journey to the West African country of Senegal.

There was thick fog in the region where the plane went down.
