At least eight deaths have been reported due to floods and lightening along with torrential rains in different parts of Sri Lanka, disaster officials said Sunday.
Pradeep Kodippily, the national co-ordinator of the disaster management center said that five people were killed by lightening and three were killed due to floods in the southeastern district of Moneragala, western Gampaha district and southwestern Ratnapura district on Saturday and Sunday.
The island has been experiencing heavy north eastern monsoons since Friday.
Kodippily said the central Badulla district's main highway between Badulla and Haputale came to be shut Sunday afternoon following land slides.
Several roads in the southern Galle district were also impassable due to heavy rain and flooding, officials said.
The inclement weather is likely to be continued through the next two days, the meteorological department said.
