South Africa's former head of national police has been accused of corruption and sentenced to 15 years in jail, media reported on Tuesday.

The chief Jackie Selebi was convicted in July, the report said, adding the ruling was made after testimony was heard about Selebi going on designer shopping sprees with a convicted drug smuggler.

The judge was quoted as calling Selebi an "embarrassment to the position".
