Colombia recalls ambassador to Venezuela

The Colombian government recalled its ambassador to Venezuela Wednesday for consultations after evidence showed Colombian leftist guerrilla leaders were hiding in Venezuela, local media said.
Ambassador Maria Luisa Chiappe is back in the Colombian capital waiting to attend an extraordinary meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS).
The meeting, to be held Thursday, was expected to focus on convincing Venezuela that Colombia was seeking cooperation rather than confrontation.
Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva said the documents, including maps and videos, had been given to Luis Alfonso Hoyos, the Colombian ambassador to the OAS.
The Defense Ministry had provided all the information needed for Hoyos to prove to the OAS that members of the Comlombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) were seeking refuge in Venezuela, Silva said.
The Venezuelan government has strongly rejected the allegations and recalled its ambassador from Colombia for consultations last Friday.
Diplomatic and commercial ties between the two countries have been frozen since August 2009, when Colombia and the United States signed a military agreement, which was deemed by Caracas as a violation of Venezuelan sovereignty.
