A U.S. soldier was killed and two others were injured in a vehicle accident in south Iraq, the U.S. military said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Friday when a U.S. military vehicle rolled over in an area located south of the al-Diwaniyah city, some 180 km south of Baghdad, a military statement said.

The wounded soldiers were taken to a medical military base for treatment, the statement added.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it said.

The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to about 4,409 since the breakout of the U.S.- led war on Iraq in 2003, according to media account based on Pentagon figures.
