ASEAN will take parts in the G20 Summit in Toronto, Canada from June 26 to 27 to present its collective views and ensure close coordination between its regional approaches and the global approach undertaken by the G20, a statement issued by the ASEAN Secretary said in Jakarta Tuesday.
The summit will discuss solutions to the global economic and financial crisis. The G-20 Toronto Summit will also take stock of the implementation of commitments from the previous Summits.
Viet Nam, as the Chair of ASEAN, will join the G20 members.
The ASEAN delegation will also include the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan.
"This is another sign of recognition from the global community of ASEAN's potential and success as a regional organization. It also shows support for ASEAN's vision of a community," Surin said.
On its agenda this time around include the development of coordinated exit strategies while ensuring sustainable and balanced growth; evaluation of progress on financial sector reform; a review of the steps taken by international financial institutions to enhance their governance and strengthen their lending capacities; and an assessment of global trade and growth.
While Canada is the chair of the first G-20 Summit for 2010, the Republic of Korea will play host to the second Summit of the year in November. The Group of Twenty was formally established in 1999 to bring together major industrialised and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy.
