Shahzad, who was allegedly trying to set off a car bomb in Times Square on May 1, was indicted by a federal grand jury.
Pakistani-born Shahzad, who became a U.S. citizen in 2009, has been indicted on 10 charges, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted terrorism transcending national borders.
The indictment alleged that Shahzad received explosives training in Waziristan, Pakistan, in December 2009 from trainers affiliated with Tehrik-e-Taliban, a militant extremist group based in Pakistan.
He faces life in prison if convicted.
