Magnitude-5.5 earthquake hits Japan

A magnitude-5.5 earthquake occurred in Japan's Bonin Islands region on Friday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The temblor struck at 2:37 am local time Saturday (1637 GMT Friday), with its epicenter some 50 km south-southeast of Chichi- shima, Bonin Islands. It was located at a depth of 35 km.

No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
