U.S. President Barack Obama vowed on Wednesday that his administration will do what it can to stop the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico.

The federal government is "going to bring every resource necessary to put a stop" to the spill, the president said during a visit to a solar panel manufacturing facility in Fremont, California.

"We will not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired, and the cleanup is complete."

The president said the catastrophe underscored the importance of seeking alternative energy.

"The spill in the Gulf, which is just heartbreaking, only underscores the necessity" of seeking alternative fuel sources," he said.

"A lot of damage has been done already," the president said, adding that the unfolding environmental disaster "gives you a sense of where we're going" without comprehensive reform.

A failure to enact comprehensive energy reform, he argued, would pose a threat to national security and the economy, as well as the environment.

In Fremont, California, Obama toured Solyndra, Inc., a solar panel manufacturing facility.

Through the Recovery Act, the Department of Energy offered a 535-million-dollar loan guarantee to Solyndra, Inc., to support the construction of a commercial-scale manufacturing plant for its proprietary solar photovoltaic panels.

Solyndra is an active construction site enabling the creation of over 3,000 construction-related jobs, making it one of the biggest Recovery Act-funded projects as measured by jobs.
