Philippines' Commission on Election (Comelec) Monday has declared a failure of election in certain areas in Mindanao and Visayas following cases of violence.

Nine towns in Mindanao -- six towns in Lanao del Sur and three towns in the Basilan province -- have been recommended for failure of election "because of hostilities," James Jimenez, Comelec Spokesman, said.

"It seems there is more violence now than in previous election and the quality of violence has gotten worst. That is very unfortunate. Politicians know that they can no longer cheat," Jimenez said.

"To be more dramatic about it, there is war there," Jimenez said pertaining to the Basilan province.

A failure of election meanwhile has been declared in towns of Pagsanghan and Gimbal in Samar following confirmed reports of ballot switching, Jimenez said.
