Maldivian president meets China's delegation

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday met in Male with a delegation from the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) led by its Vice Chairman Sun Jiazheng and the two sides reached a broad consensus on many issues discussed.

Nasheed spoke positively of the development of relations between the two countries and reiterated that the Maldives will adhere to the one-China policy, according to reports reaching here from the Maldivian capital of Male.

Sun said China always maintains that all countries, big or small, are equal members of the international community, and it will continue to promote friendly cooperation and exchanges with the Maldives on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

At a separate meeting with the Chinese delegation, Abdulla Shahid, speaker of the People's Majlis or parliament, thanked China for its long-term assistance and support and hoped that the two countries would strengthen cooperation in clean energy and environmental protection.

Sun said China understands the Maldives' concerns over the issues of energy and environmental protection and is ready to continue discussions with the Maldives on these issues.

Sun also briefed the Maldivian leaders on China's multi-party cooperation and political consultation systems under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
