The Sri Lankan government said Wednesday that three people were killed while 302,835 people of over 83,000 families marooned by floods in the east.
Pradeep Kodippily, assistant director of the Disaster Management Center, told reporters that Ampara and Batticaloa districts in the Eastern Province were the worst affected.
Kodippily said heavy rains lashed the area on Monday and Tuesday and the deaths were caused by lightning and the collapse of a wall.
The Disaster Management Center has opened eight camps to house those displaced by floods.
The atmospheric disturbance which caused heavy rains should continue and wet weather condition would prevail for some time, the Meteorological Department said.
