The Sixth China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference opened in Hanoi on Tuesday, drawing public prosecutors from China and ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The two-day conference is themed in "Strengthening cooperation in mutual legal assistance in criminal matters to effectively combat transnational organized crimes."

Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet attended the opening session of the conference.

Tran Quoc Vuong, Head of Vietnam's Supreme People's Procuracy and chairman of the conference said at the opening session that transnational organized crime situation has become more complex in recent years in the region.

"Strengthening the cooperation among countries to prevent and fight against transnational organized crimes is important to the international community as a whole and the ASEAN community in particular," said Vuong.

Vuong expects delegates to the conference could have in-depth discussions to bring forward solutions and action plans to improve cooperation mechanism among procuratorial offices of the ASEAN and China in combating and preventing transnational organized crimes.

Cao Jianming, Procurator-General of China's Supreme People's Procuratorate, made four proposals at the conference to enhance judicial and procuratorial cooperation among China and the ASEAN.

First, China and the ASEAN should continue regular dialogues and visits between top officials, said Cao. Second, China and the ASEAN should actively improve the cooperation mechanism.

Third, Cao called for deepened international cooperation on anti-corruption and anti-money laundering, and promote the establishment of healthy and orderly regional international financial system. Fourth, Cao said the relevant parties should enhance cooperation in the non-traditional safety field.

Cao said the China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference mechanism is one of the important dialogue mechanisms for China and the ASEAN to carry out all-round cooperation.

It is the desire of procuratorial organs of China to further actively expand the cooperation scope, enrich the cooperation work and upgrade the cooperation level with their counterparts of all ASEAN countries, he said.

The China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference was initiated by China's Supreme People's Procuratorate in 2004. The aim of the conference is to strengthen exchange and cooperation among prosecution services of China and ASEAN countries.
