Honduran interim gov't to lift emergency decree

Honduran interim President Roberto Micheletti said on Monday he will ask his ministers to lift the emergency decree issued two weeks ago, which suspends civil rights.
Micheletti said he will ask his ministers during a meeting later Monday to discuss the political crisis in the country, aroused since the June 28 coup against ousted President Manuel Zelaya.
"I am going to respectfully ask, that just as we took the decision to impose it, that we lift it," Micheletti told local TV channel Canal 5 during an interview.
Micheletti said the decree is not needed anymore because "there is peace in the country."
The interim government issued a 45-day decree on Sept. 26 after Zelaya's return to the country and the protests supporting him started all over the country.
The decree banned meetings of more than 20 people and it was also used to close two media groups supporting Zelaya.
Since Zelaya's return to Honduras, he has expressed his willingness to have dialogue with the interim government as a way to reach a negotiated solution for the political crisis in the country. The interim government has also expressed its will for dialogue.
