Russia's Central Election Commission has declared incumbent Prime Minister Vladimir Putin winner of Sunday's presidential election.

The commission's final results show Putin won the election with around 63 percent of the votes. Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov came in second with more than 17 percent, while independent billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov secured nearly 8 percent. Voter turnout was put at about 65 percent.
The election commission's Deputy Chairman said that Russia had fulfilled all its obligations to invite international observers to the presidential election.
According to the commission, some 685 international observers from 56 countries had been granted accreditations to monitor the election.
