Iran's military says it has advanced submarines capable of destroying US aircraft carriers stationed in the Persian Gulf. The message comes as the Islamic Republic's foreign minister said Thursday that Tehran had never tried to block the Strait of Hormuz. He also warned Iran's neighbours to stay out of any possible conflict.
Iran is showing it's strength issuing warnings and appealing for talks, all at the same time.
The Deputy commander of the Iranian Armed Forces, Farhad Amiri, says Iranian submarines are equipped with advanced torpedoes and sonar systems, that can prevent enemy forces tracking them. And he says they're capable of targeting hostile aircraft carriers in the nearby Persian Gulf.
But Iran is not only issuing threats. Iran's Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, on Thursday said Tehran had never tried to block the Strait of Hormuz. But he accused some of Iran's neighbors of putting themselves in a "dangerous position".
Saudi Arabia has recently clashed with Iran. The world's No.1 oil exporter suggested it could raise oil output to counterbalance any embargo on Iranian oil. It also said it would work to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
Iran's Foreign Minister says the US should be open to negotiations with Tehran without conditions.
The United States says it's prepared to talk to Iran but only if Tehran agrees to discuss halting its uranium enrichment program.
