Journey home is hard but sweet

Making the journey home before Spring Festival is extremely hard for migrant workers. There’s the difficulty in getting a train ticket, and then getting to the remote areas where they live. But few of them would give up the effort, as they say family is all they work for in the big cities.
Early in the morning, people have already gathered at this bus station in Guizhou Province for the journey home to Huanglian village. The heavy snow means the bus can’t get all the way to their destination.
A bus driver said, "I can only drive them to Yanwan village, a two- or three-hour walk from Huanglian, their destination."
Passengers don’t seem surprised. They’re just excited at the idea of seeing their families in several hours. This is 30-year-old Ao Cai and his three-year-old son. He called his mother as soon as the trip began.
A day before, they already had an exhausting journey here from Jiangxi Province, where Ao Cai works. He says it will be the first time that his son meets his grand-parents. And now a traffic accident blocks their way.
Traffic resumes an hour later. And the temperature continues to drop as the bus climbs to an altitude of more than 14-hundred meters. The snow becomes so thick the passengers have to get off and walk.
Though it’s still a long distance away, Ao Cai’s spirits remain high.
Ao’s little boy is very excited to see snow for the first time. More than an hour’s walk on the icy mountain road seems to be a sweet journey for the father and the son.
Two hours later, the moment they’ve been waiting for. Ao Cai says his family isn’t rich, but he’ll come back to see his parents every Spring Festival, no matter how hard the journey is.
