This year's ninth typhoon, Muifa, has brushed past China's eastern coast, making landfall on the northwest shores of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. As Muifa's impact on China is reducing, the China Meteorological Administration has lifted the blue typhoon alert.
Muifa is now moving northeast at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour. Under the impact of Muifa's remaining cloud system, northeast China including Liaoning, Jilin and HeiLongjiang Provinces could see heavy downpours and strong gales.
High waves and strong gales have been the story for China's east as well as the northeast regions recently. Muifa is now swirling through the northeast parts of China, bringing heavy downpours and strong gales.
In Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province, the rain has been falling since 4am Monday morning. With the city soaked through, those on foot seem to be the most mobile. In response, the local flood control and drought relief headquarters has been closely monitoring the latest situation.
A little southwest to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the city of Tongliao also experienced heavy downpours. Accumulation of up to 20 centimeters of water can be seen along the road, causing great travel chaos. Meanwhile, Liaoning Province also took hammering from Muifa.
Mudslides occurred on a hill near a community in the city of Dalian. Power has been cut to some apartments but no injuries have been reported. A local resident said, "The mudslides happened because the rain has lasted for a long time. Besides, the soil was not so solid initially."
Since last Thursday, downpours and winds caused by the tropical storm Muifa have battered 183 counties in China's five coastal provinces, causing direct economic losses of over 3 billion yuan.
More than three million people have been affected, with another one million evacuated to safer grounds. Muifa swirled into the East China Sea last Friday morning and weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday.
It made landfall on the northwest coast of the DPRK on Monday evening, after killing four people along the west coast of South Korea.
