Aside from meeting Chinese government and military leaders, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mike Mullen is visiting various units in almost every part of the Chinese military, including the army, navy, and air force. As well, Mullen will visit the Peoples Liberation Army's Second Artillery Force, a strategic missile force that controls the country's nuclear weapons. Mullen is the first foreign military official to be given a look at some of China's secret facilities.

China is opening up some of its most sensitive military facilities.

Admiral Mike Mullen visited an air force base of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in east China's Shandong Province.

The base is a terminal of the 19th Division of the Air Command under the PLA Jinan Military Area Command, with mainly Su-27 fighters stationed there.

The division's commander, accompanied Mullen and his entourage in their visit to the base.

Besides discussions on the weapons and equipment, the group also watched an aerial show.

For years, the US has urged greater transparency from China over its military modernization.

The opening of the military bases is a sign of improved trust between the two sides.

Later Mullen went to a mechanized infantry division in east China's Zhejiang Province, where he watched an anti-terrorism drill.

Mullen's visit began on July 9th as guest of Chen Bingde, chief of PLA's General Staff.

General Chen Bingde made a similar trip to the US in May, when he also visited US military bases.
