A volcano in southern Chile continues to erupt, billowing smoke and ash high into the sky. According to Chile's geological agency, a column of gas has risen from the Puyehue volcano, spanning five-kilometers in width and reaching heights of 10 kilometers.
The eruption has forced more than 3,500 people to evacuate. No injuries have been reported so far. The volcano in the Caulle Cordon mountain range began erupting violently on Saturday afternoon after a flurry of earthquakes.
The National Emergency Office says it recorded an average of 230 tremors per hour on the morning preceding the eruption. The volcano is nearly 1,000 kilometers south of the Chilean capital of Santiago.
