Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou has given a review of his three-year performance. He says his administration has actively improved Cross-Strait ties with the Chinese mainland and allowed people in Taiwan to enjoy a peaceful and prosperous cross-Strait environment.
Ma Ying-jeou made the remarks at a press conference in Tainan, a city in South Taiwan. He says Taiwan authorities have gradually transformed the Taiwan Strait from a military hotspot into a peaceful thoroughfare over the past three years.
He says the better cross-Strait relationship will benefit future generations on both sides of the Strait. He also says the Chinese mainland's economic emergence has brought Taiwan many opportunities, along with China's transformation from a 'world factory' to a world market. He says implementing a closed-door policy with the mainland would harm Taiwan. Ma Ying-jeou took office as Taiwan leader in May, 2008.
