On Saturday, a particularly ferocious storm ripped through the South, killing dozens of people and causing extensive damage in North Carolina. Raleigh, the state capital, has seen many of its large thoroughfares blocked by fallen trees. Officials expect the death toll to rise as damage assessments continue.
Charles Meeker, Mayor of Raleigh, said, "Lots of people, virtually everyone seemed to be aware that the storm was coming, were paying attention and tried to get out of harm's way. It was helpful that it happened during a time when people were awake."
