Smoke and ash continue to spew from the Shin-moe-dake volcano in south Japan. Local officials have raised the alert level and banned residents from going within a two-kilometer radius of the mountain. Daily life of the local has been affected, after train service in the area were suspended.

Volcanic ash and rocks fell across a wide area of southern Japan on Thursday, affecting the prefectures of Miyazaki and Kagoshima.

There was a small eruption from Shinmoedake on Wednesday, which sent a plume of smoke reaching as high as 15-hundred meters, forcing nine families living close to the foot of the mountain to evacuate.

By Thursday morning residents as far as seven kilometers away said their windows had trembled and they were kept awake by the loud rumbling sound.
