Six people were confirmed dead in a mass shooting on January 9, 2011 in Tucson, the U.S. state of Arizona, which also left 12 others injured, including U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. Police say Giffords was the intended target. A man opened fire outside a shopping center while Gabrielle Giffords was meeting constituents.

40 year old Giffords was re-elected to her third term last November. She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before going to Washington. Giffords was elected to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in the 2006 election.
