A Chinese medical team has returned to Beijing after performing several hundred surgeries on cataract patients in Africa. This marks the conclusion of the 2010 China-Africa Brightness Action.
612 patients in Malawi and Zimbabwe were offered access to free vision rehabilitation surgeries during the week-long event. Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe spoke highly of the event. Zimbabwe has 120,000 cataract patients, but only a fraction of them, 5,000 have the opportunity to receive surgeries every year.
Similar events have been held since 2008. Chinese medical teams helped thousands of cataract patients in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia and Cambodia.
