China has more people living with diabetes than any other country. A report found more than 90 million people in China are diabetic, adding that the country has the fastest rate of new cases in the world. Yang Yan looks at how the disease has become the China's biggest killer.
More than one in ten adults in China has diabetes. Many more cases remain undiagnosed, with nearly 150 million people showing early symptoms.
This indicates the disease is more endemic than previously thought.
Wu Yangfeng, Vice-Chairman, Peking University Clinical Research Inst., said, "The biggest concern is the rapid rate of new cases. Diabetes is one of the most dangerous triggers to more serious, fatal respiratory diseases."
Diabetes has spiked among men and women aged between 20 and 70. 10.5 percent of all respondents were found to suffer the disease.
Experts say rates of the disease have soared in many countries around the world. This has been attributed to people leading less active lifestyles and taking in more calories.
Wu Yangfeng, said, "Diabetes is a disease that represents 'the tip of the iceberg'. It can often be a red flag for other risks, including heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. The consequences of this can be severe and fatal."
Experts recommend people adopt moderate changes to their lifestyles. This can be as simple as walking 30 minutes daily or cutting back on the calories to reduce your risk to diabetes.
