Southern China provinces are bracing themselves for typhoon Megi, as the strongest tropical storm of the year moves toward coastal regions.

Megi, which means "catfish" in Korean, has intensified back into a super typhoon Tuesday after reaching the South China Sea late Monday night. The typhoon is expected to make landfall in the central or western coast of Guangdong around Saturday and will bring torrential rain to the province over the following few days.

The State Oceanic Administration estimates that the coast could see five to seven meter high waves over the next 48 to 72 hours. Local authorities have ordered all fishing boats to return to port and officials in charge of reservoirs and hydro-power stations to be on alert.
