In Taiwan, residents have started the job of clearing up their homes after massive flooding caused by Typhoon Fanapi. The storm killed two people and caused severe damage.

Typhoon Fanapi hit Taiwan on Sunday, dumping more than a meter of rainfall in some places.

Military vehicles have entered flooded areas to help trapped residents in the southern part of the island, including the second largest city, Kaohsiung.

There, floodwaters have submerged streets and the first floor of many buildings. Many vehicles have been inundated and the city's drainage system has also been damaged.

Meanwhile, local residents waded through ankle-deep mud to clean up their homes.

Taiwan's Central Emergency Operation Center put overall damage to farms and fisheries at more than two billion new Taiwan dollars, while the Economic authorities say the island's industrial sector also suffered two billion new Taiwan dollars in damage.

Fanapi was the first major storm to strike the island this year. Schools and offices were closed in southern Taiwan, and more than 10 thousand residents from remote areas were evacuated.
