The Eiffel Tower, and its immediate surroundings in Paris, have been evacuated after an anonymous caller phoned in a bomb threat.

About 2,000 people were then cleared away from the 324-meter monument, on the banks of the Seine River. Police have been checking the scene for suspicious objects. Despite the scare, tourists and curious Parisians continued to mill around the adjoining sidewalks, and traffic continued to circulate nearby. Several police trucks were posted under the tower, and officers, stood guard to tighten security.

One station from the Paris Regional Express Network was also cleared two hours after the Eiffel Tower evacuation.
