Rumors had swirled ahead of the announcement that Maradona would not continue as Argentina's coach. Like his time in charge, the last few weeks since his sides exit from the competition have been something of a roller coaster ride, Let's take a look at events in the run up to his departure.

July 4th, Maradona was frustrated after Argentina was thrashed by Germany 4-0 in World Cup quarterfinal and threatened to walk away from his position.

Maradona returned to Buenos Aires on July 5th with jubilant fans waiting for them. Fans shouted with banner "Stay, Maradona".

July, 6th, Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez asked Maradona to stay on as coach via a video message.

July 8th, Argentina's football association decided to continue the contract with Maradona, and association president Julio Grondona offers Maradona a free hand in his coaching style.

July 22th, Maradona said he would make a decision to stay or leave and was confident when meeting Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's President and joked that he was not in the country looking for a job.

July 25th, Argentina's football association president Julio Grondona asked Maradona to change his coaching staff, but his reply was bullish citing he'd only stay on as coach if he could keep choose his assistants. Because of an apparent disagreement with the AFA over his coaching staff, Maradona was dropped as the national team coach, a position he held since November 2008.
