Typhoon Conson has made landfall in Southern China's Hainan province. The storm struck late Friday, causing casualties and great damage to public facilities.

Conson landed at 7:50 p.m. at Yalong Bay of Sanya City.

The disaster prevention office of Sanya City says the storm packed winds of up to 126 kilometers per hour.

It brought heavy rains, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and cutting the power supply in many parts of Sanya City.

A motorcyclist was killed after being struck by a falling billboard. Another man was buried in debris after his house was hit by a giant billboard.

He was found dead after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the assistance of machinery.

The typhoon is expected to hover over the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.

40,000 people across the island have been relocated and all fishing boats recalled to port.

Local authorities have dispatched relief workers in case of any emergency rescue efforts. People are being warned to prepare against flooding and possible landslides.

Meanwhile, Conson also brought downpours and gales to the coastal province of Guangdong in southern China.

Rainstorms are expected to pelt parts of Guangdong over the next two days.
