At least 17 people have been killed and more than 250 others injured in overnight clashes in southern Kyrgyzstan.

The country's interim government declared a state of emergency in the southern city of Osh due to the turmoil.

Armored vehicles and troops have also been sent to stabilize the situation after hundreds of youths smashed windows, looted shops and set fire to cars in the city.

Many of the victims were sent to hospital. More than 40 are in serious condition.

Roza Otunbayeva, Interim President of Kyrgyzstan, said, "This situation causes us deep concern. It is being fueled by different forces, including those who are interested in destabilizing the situation in Kyrgyzstan and those who want to disrupt the upcoming referendum."
