Now let's take a look at how students in Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions as well as Taiwan enter college.
Taiwan abolished college entrance exams in 2002 and started to implement a multiple college entrance program. In Taiwan, college exams and admissions are separate. Exams are organized by one department, and admissions are independent to all colleges. They set their own requirements for enrolling students. It is not difficult to enter college in Taiwan, but it is still very competitive if you want to be admitted by the top level universities.
In Hong Kong, middle school students need to submit applications, take A-Level exams and be interviewed before being admitted to college. While in Macao, all universities have independent admission requirements. Students can apply for many universities at a time. The universities make their decisions based on college entrance exam results.
