Jamaican soldiers and police have stormed a Kingston slum and traded gunfire with supporters of an alleged drug kingpin who faces extradition to the U.S.
Monday saw a second day of violence between police and the masked gunmen. At least four people were killed, including two policemen, one soldier and a civilian. The government has declared a state of emergency in volatile sections of the capital. Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding is vowing strong and decisive action to restore order. The heavily armed gang members have been defending the West Kingston base of Christopher "Dudas" Coke. He's been indicted in the US on drug and arms trafficking charges. Officials say the violence has had no impact so far on the island's bauxite, sugar, and banana producing sectors.
