At the AFC Women's Asian Cup, team China had an opportunity to finish on top of Group B as they took to the pitch against Australia. The win would move China into the semi-finals in first, and move the team one step closer to the Women's World Cup as the top three finishers in Chengdu earn their berths.

China were aggressive as they took control of the field and launched frequent attacks, while Australia, who have already qualified for the semifinals on Friday with one match spare, didn't send their strongest onto the field.

Midfielder Zhang Rui scored the only goal for the hosts as she unleashed a superb shot in the 10th minute to put China up 1-nil.

The hosts missed the chance to enlarge the lead when Han Duan's low shot was saved by Australia's goalkeeper Lydia Williams. Australia launched several counter attacks in the end of the match but failed to score.

China now top the Group B rankings after the win and they will meet the runners-up of Group A in the semifinals on Thursday.
