Kyrgyz opposition leader appeals for economic aid from Russia

The leader of Kyrgyzstan's interim government has spoken to Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin. Roza Otunbayeva appealed for economic assistance from Russia during the phone conversation.
Otunbayeva visited those wounded during the past two days of civil unrest at a hospital in the capital, Bishkek. She said securing economic aid had topped the agenda in her discussion with Putin.
Roza Otunbayeva said, "He asked me about the situation, about what needs we have, and I responded that yes, we have some economical and financial needs. And my deputy, who is in charge of economical issues, he's today in Moscow."
She added that the pair's conversation did not involve the issue of Kyrgyzstan's US air base.
Otunbayeva said, "We are not raising this issue, we are keeping our commitments, which we signed, those international agreements, some times ago, so continue to keep those commitments."
Otunbayeva said her interim government would not negotiate with President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. He fled the capital earlier in the week to seek support in southern part of the country.
On Thursday, Bakiyev refused to resign from office. He blamed the opposition leader for the violent riots that killed 76 people and wounded more than 14-hundred others.
The interim government has vowed to organize a general election within the next six months to help rebuild the Central Asian country.
Meanwhile, calm returned to Bishkek on Friday, with no reports of civil unrest or looting.
