Fiji's government is beginning to send emergency workers AND aid into areas hit hard on the weekend by a powerful cyclon as up to 150,000 people are in need of help. The disaster has blown away people's homes and blocked transportation in the affected areas.
One death has been reported, but the full extent of the damage has yet to be determined because communications to the hardest hit areas were cut off for days.
Fiji's Prime Minister and Military Chief Commodore Frank Bainimarama said, "The government's first priority at this stage is to carry out an assessment to determine the full extent of the damage. While carrying out these assessments, emergency supplies including food and water, shall be delivered to the affected regions."
Cyclone Tomas began battering Fiji on Friday with winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 280 kilometers per hour.
