China makes history in Vancouver

The Vancouver Olympic games were all about firsts and breakthroughs. China sent a team well equipped to compete with other leading winter sport nations such as the US, Canada and the Scandinavian countries. With a total of 5 golds, 2 silvers and 4 bronze medals, Chinese nationals the world over can be proud of the best placed finish ever at a snow covered Olympiad.

After injuries and time away from the sport - the King and queen of the ice rink made one last appearance at a games. The married paring of Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo pulled out all the stops with a near flawless performance - gliding to gold in pairs figure skating. The medal would be China's first gold in Winter games figure skating history.

Elsewhere on ice - Wang Meng slipped into the history books with an all out assault on becoming the worlds best short track skater. Tearing up record books - creating her own, she bossed the 500-m and 1000-m winning gold. Became the first Chinese skater to defend her Olympic title and was also part of the team that decimated an Olympic record by winning the 3 thousand meter relay after South Korea were disqualified.
