It's the highest-grossing film ever and it's up for nine Oscar awards, so yes - expect an "Avatar" sequel. The film's creative team recently gathered to discuss ways in which they could learn from the first film, and how those lessons could be applied to future movies.
"Avatar" producer Jon Landau says too much work was put in to the film to leave it without a sequel. With takings of more than $2 billion worldwide, James Cameron's film has shattered the global box-office record of $1.84 billion held by one of his other movies, "Titanic."
Just before the release of "Avatar" in December, writer-director Cameron said he had the "broad strokes for two more films." Fox hasn't yet formally announced a sequel, but it's clear that the creators are interested in pursuing more stories on Pandora.
Crew members are also enthused about gathering again for more work under Cameron.
"Avatar" has earned nine Academy Awards nominations, including best picture, tying "The Hurt Locker" for highest number of nods.
